San Antonio witnessed a significant moment in its architectural landscape today as Zachry Hospitality marked the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hemisfair Hotel, a project five years in the making. Positioned just steps away from iconic landmarks such as La Villita, The Alamo, and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, the proposed 17-story, 200-room Hemisfair Hotel secured approval from the City of San Antonio Historic and Design Review Commission.
A collaborative effort between Zachry Hospitality, Hemisfair, and Overland’s hospitality team, the new hotel is poised to join the Curio Collection by Hilton, representing the inaugural venture in the mixed-use development plan for Hemisfair Civic Park. The hotel’s strategic location near the northwest end of South Alamo and Market Streets ensures it will be a prominent feature in the city’s skyline.
Designed as a curved tower, the Hemisfair Hotel promises guests panoramic views of the park to the east and captivating cityscapes to the west and north, encompassing the River Walk and the iconic Torch of Friendship art installation at the crossroads of Commerce, Market, and South Alamo Streets.
The terraced base of the 17-story structure goes beyond mere accommodation, featuring ground floor retail spaces, upscale restaurants, various food and beverage options, an enticing rooftop bar, and a garden adorned with public art accessible from the park at ground level. The hotel will also offer 10,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space.
Anticipated to open its doors in early 2026, The Monarch Hotel, as it will be known, draws inspiration from the monarch butterflies that grace San Antonio each winter season during their migration. While the hotel aimed to be ready for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four Tournament, a slight delay is expected, emphasizing the commitment to delivering a high-quality, sustainable design that harmonizes with the city’s natural surroundings.
Sustainable design elements, including native stone, lush vegetation, and integrated water features, echo the natural beauty fostered by the Balcones Escarpment that spans the region. As the Hemisfair Hotel takes shape, it heralds a new era of architectural brilliance and hospitality excellence in the heart of San Antonio.
