A Storied Past
The roots of Wonder Theatre trace back to the historic Woodlawn Theatre, which opened in 1945. Designed by acclaimed architect John Eberson, the theatre has a rich history, including hosting the world premiere of John Wayne’s “The Alamo” in 1960. Over the decades, the venue underwent various transformations, including a stint as a laser show venue and concert hall.
In 2006, the theatre was revitalized as a community theatre, and in 2012, it became a non-profit under the guidance of Kurt and Sherry Wehner. The venue not only hosted Broadway-style shows but also developed an educational program for young performers through the Woodlawn Academy for the Performing Arts. Recognized as a historic structure by the City of San Antonio in 2013, the theatre became a landmark of the community.
In 2023, the theatre rebranded as Wonder Theatre and relocated to the Wonderland of the Americas, continuing its legacy of enriching San Antonio’s cultural landscape.
Engaging the Community
Wonder Theatre invites everyone to experience its diverse range of musical theatre productions. With its new location and continued dedication to quality and community engagement, Wonder Theatre is set to be a cornerstone of performing arts in San Antonio for years to come.
