Weekend Closures Announced for Loop 1604 North Expansion Project | April 25–28, 2025

SAN ANTONIO, TX (April 25, 2025) – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced a series of weekend closures along Loop 1604 as part of the ongoing $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project. Drivers should prepare for nightly and daytime closures from Friday, April 25, at 9:00 p.m. through Monday, April 28, at 5:00 a.m.

These closures will affect major interchanges, ramps, and frontage roads across several segments of Loop 1604, particularly at I-10 and US 281, as crews continue work to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance mobility across 23 miles of Loop 1604 between SH 16 (Bandera Road) and I-35.


Weekend Nightly Closures (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.)

Friday, April 25 to Monday, April 28

Closures include:

  • Loop 1604 EB & WB mainlanes at I-10 and US 281 interchanges

  • Exit ramp to Bitters Road

  • Entrance ramp from Babcock Road

  • Single-lane closures between Babcock and Kyle Seale Parkway

  • I-10 EB mainlanes and ramps at Loop 1604

  • US 281 NB & SB mainlanes at Loop 1604


Weekend Daytime Closures (5 a.m. to 9 p.m.)

Saturday, April 26 to Sunday, April 27

Daytime closures mirror many of the nightly restrictions, including:

  • Bitters Road exit (EB)

  • Frontage roads at US 281 (EB/WB)

  • I-10 WB to Loop 1604 EB exit ramp

  • Babcock Road entrance ramp (WB)

  • Loop 1604 mainlanes and frontage roads at key segments


Detour Information

TxDOT has provided several detour options for impacted areas:

  • Loop 1604 EB at I-10: Exit at Vance Jackson, use frontage road

  • Access to Bitters & Huebner Roads: Use NW Military Highway exit

  • US 281 Interchange (EB & WB): Use respective frontage road turnarounds at Donella Dr. and Redland Rd.

  • I-10 WB to Loop 1604 EB: Follow turnarounds at La Cantera Pkwy for alternate access

  • US 281 NB/SB: Use exits at Henderson Pass (NB) and Redland Road (SB) to re-enter after interchanges


Project Background

The Loop 1604 North Expansion Project is part of Texas Clear Lanes, a statewide initiative to tackle congestion in metropolitan areas. The improvements include:

  • Expanding mainlanes from 4 to 10 lanes

  • Adding HOV lanes in both directions

  • Constructing a multi-level I-10 interchange

  • Redesigning Blanco Road intersections

  • Including new bike and pedestrian paths

Current Segment Timelines:

  • Segment 1 (SH 16 to I-10): On schedule for completion in 2025

  • Segment 2 (I-10 Interchange): Completion by 2027

  • Segment 3 (I-10 to US 281): Completion by early 2026

  • Segment 4 (US 281 to Redland Rd.): Completion by 2027

  • Segment 5 (Redland Rd. to Judson Rd.): Construction began spring 2025

TxDOT reminds drivers to stay alert in construction zones and follow all posted signage and detours. Access to local businesses will remain open, and law enforcement will assist with traffic management as needed.
