Excitement continues to build as the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) solidifies its entrance into the American Athletic Conference (AAC) with an agreed-upon competition start date of July 1, 2023. This significant development comes after the AAC reached an agreement with three of its exiting schools, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF, to terminate their conference memberships on June 30, 2023.
UTSA, along with Charlotte, UAB, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, and Rice, had their applications for membership approved by the conference’s nine continuing members, as announced in October. The entrance agreement with the AAC not only marks a new era for UTSA’s athletic programs but also presents a remarkable opportunity to further elevate the university’s national brand and strengthen its ties to the vibrant city of San Antonio.
Lisa Campos, UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, expressed her enthusiasm about the university’s entrance into the AAC, stating, “We are thrilled about joining the American Athletic Conference in 2023 and continuing to elevate UTSA as a national brand. This new conference affiliation will be a tremendous opportunity for our university and the City of San Antonio. We could not be more excited and optimistic about what the future holds.”
Campos also expressed gratitude towards Commissioner Judy MacLeod, the Conference USA Board, and the league office for their collaboration and support throughout the transition process. UTSA looks forward to concluding its decade-long membership in Conference USA (C-USA) on a high note before embarking on this new chapter in the AAC.
The agreed-upon entrance date solidifies UTSA’s position as a member of the AAC and sets the stage for thrilling matchups against renowned athletic programs in the conference. UTSA’s student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete on a larger stage, showcasing their talent and dedication to the Roadrunner community and beyond.
As UTSA prepares to join the AAC, the university remains committed to its mission of fostering excellence, both on and off the field. The transition to the AAC aligns with UTSA’s ongoing efforts to provide student-athletes with a comprehensive collegiate experience, emphasizing the values of sportsmanship, personal growth, and academic success.
With the entrance agreement in place, the anticipation continues to build among students, alumni, faculty, and fans. UTSA’s journey in the AAC promises memorable moments, fierce competition, and the chance to further solidify the university’s standing as a rising force in collegiate athletics.
As July 1, 2023 approaches, the entire UTSA community eagerly awaits the debut of Roadrunner athletics in the American Athletic Conference. This momentous occasion represents a new chapter in UTSA’s athletic history, filled with endless possibilities and opportunities for growth. The university’s entrance into the AAC not only elevates its athletic programs but also brings pride and excitement to the city of San Antonio and the loyal Roadrunner fan base.
UTSA is ready to make its mark in the American Athletic Conference, showcasing the talent, resilience, and spirit that define the Roadrunner community. With each game played and each victory earned, UTSA will proudly represent the university, San Antonio, and the state of Texas, leaving a lasting legacy in the annals of collegiate athletics.
