In a groundbreaking triumph, UTSA Football secured its first-ever bowl win with a resounding 35-17 victory over Marshall in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday night. The historic win showcased the Roadrunners’ prowess and resilience in a memorable performance.
The match witnessed standout performances, with Joshua Cephus catching seven passes for 102 yards and a crucial touchdown. Kam Alexander’s spectacular 57-yard interception added to the Roadrunners’ defensive brilliance, helping seal the historic win.
Owen McCown, stepping in as the starting quarterback due to Frank Harris’ injury, overcame a challenging first quarter to lead UTSA with 251 passing yards and two touchdowns. McCown’s determination and precision in the final three periods played a pivotal role in the team’s success.
A symbolic moment unfolded during the celebration as a large container of Scooter’s Coffee was joyfully dumped on Head Coach Jeff Traylor. Fortunately, the coffee was not hot at the time, adding a lighthearted touch to the historic victory celebration.
Joshua Cephus, named Offensive MVP, surpassed Zakhari Franklin to claim the top spot in UTSA’s single-season receiving yardage list, concluding his senior campaign with 1,151 yards and 10 touchdowns on 89 catches.
UTSA’s defense demonstrated strength throughout the game, limiting Marshall to 13 first downs and a 5-of-18 efficiency on third down. The defense recorded six sacks and nine tackles for lost yardage, showcasing their dominance.
