San Antonio โ€” Major improvements are coming to one of San Antonioโ€™s busiest transportation corridors as Phase I of the US 90 Expansion project gets underway in West Bexar County. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is advancing the large-scale effort to improve mobility, connectivity, and safety along US 90 from Loop 410 to Loop 1604.

The 7.6-mile project represents a significant investment in regional transportation infrastructure and is designed to address growing traffic demands in one of the fastest-developing areas of the county. Once complete, the project will widen the existing four-lane divided roadway into a six-lane expressway, extending from I-410 to SH 211.

The US 90 Expansion has been designated by the Texas Transportation Commission as part of the statewide Texas Clear Lanes initiative, which targets the most congested roadways across the state in an effort to improve traffic flow and reduce delays.

Project Improvements

Key elements of the US 90 Expansion project include:

  • Expanding US 90 from four lanes to six lanes, with three mainlanes in each direction

  • Widening the roadway footprint to add continuous two- to three-lane frontage roads in both directions

  • Constructing a two-lane flyover ramp connecting westbound US 90 to northbound Loop 1604

  • Improving major intersections at north-south cross streets, including Loop 1604, Montgomery Road, and Hunt Lane

  • Adding a westbound-to-eastbound turnaround at the US 90 and SH 211 intersection

  • Building eastbound-to-westbound turnaround bridges at Loop 1604 and Montgomery Road

  • Installing a roundabout on the south side of US 90 at Ray Ellison Boulevard and Hunt Lane/Crooked Trail

  • Constructing new sidewalks to enhance pedestrian and bicycle access

Long-Term Benefits

TxDOT officials say the project is expected to deliver substantial long-term benefits for San Antonio drivers and residents. Once completed, the improvements are projected to:

  • Reduce traffic congestion

  • Improve regional connectivity

  • Enhance roadway safety

  • Cut future commute times by as much as 90 percent by the year 2045, according to study estimates

Construction timelines are subject to change, and TxDOT encourages drivers and residents to subscribe for project updates to stay informed about construction activity, lane closures, and traffic impacts.
