TEXAS HILL COUNTRY (July 5, 2025) โ€” Tragedy struck the Texas Hill Country over the Fourth of July holiday as torrential rains triggered historic flash flooding, leaving entire communities devastated and prompting a massive emergency response effort. As of Friday evening, 27 people have been confirmed dead, and dozens more remain missing โ€” including young girls from Camp Mystic, a historic summer camp near Hunt, Texas.

The Guadalupe River surged by 26 to 30 feet in under an hour, marking one of the highest recorded rises in its history. Cabins were swept away, power was lost, and roads were submerged, cutting off access in multiple directions and halting evacuations.

โš ๏ธ Flash Flood Emergency and River Surges

Comal County officials issued a flash flood emergency along River Road, which hugs the Guadalupe River between Sattler/Canyon Lake and Gruene. Sheriff Mark Reynolds said evacuation became impossible after the road flooded and became impassable in both directions due to downed power lines and debris. Deputies were ordered to seek high ground and abandon vehicles if necessary.

The Guadalupe River in New Braunfels has also exceeded flood stage. The National Weather Service forecasts the river will crest around 13.6 feet, with moderate flooding expected and additional rain forecasted through the weekend.
