MIDLAND, TX — July 30, 2025 — Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock has announced that Texans are expected to save approximately $133.2 million in state and local sales taxes during this year’s Sales Tax Holiday, running from Friday, August 8 through Sunday, August 10.

“Back-to-school costs can add up fast,” said Hancock during a visit to a major retailer in Midland. “Whether you shop in-store or online, this tax-free weekend is a great way to stretch your dollars. Texans have saved more than $2 billion since this tradition began in 1999, and we’re proud to keep it going.”

The three-day tax break allows shoppers to purchase a variety of school-related items tax-free, including:

  • Most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100

  • Diapers (cloth and disposable)

  • Select sanitizers and wipes that contain a “Drug Facts” label

The exemption applies to purchases made in person, online, by phone, or mail. Shoppers using layaway plans can also benefit, as long as each individual item is under $100.

Important Guidelines:

  • There is no limit to the number of qualifying items.

  • Athletic gear, accessories, and computer items do not qualify.

  • Items like swimsuits, face masks, and sneakers are eligible, but golf cleats, handbags, and luggage are not.

  • Delivery charges that push an item over the $100 threshold may make it taxable.

Shoppers who are mistakenly charged tax on qualifying items can request a refund directly from the retailer or file with the Texas Comptroller’s Office.

The full list of qualifying items and rules is available at www.TexasTaxHoliday.org.

Hancock also encouraged families to shop local, supporting Texas businesses during one of the busiest retail weekends of the year.

Whether preparing for the school year or taking advantage of seasonal savings, this annual event continues to provide financial relief and support for communities across the Lone Star State.
