SAN ANTONIO, Texas โ With the spread of a rapidly circulating equine virus across Texas, rodeos throughout the state have begun canceling upcoming events to safeguard the health of horses and prevent further transmission. Tejas Rodeo Company announced Monday that it will implement significant operational changes while continuing with its signature Saturday Night Rodeo.
According to Tejas Rodeo Company, contestants typically haul in their own horses for competition. However, due to the ongoing outbreak, the venue has suspended all horse haul-ins until further notice. Any contestant entered in an event requiring the use of a hauled-in horse will have their entry canceled and all associated fees refunded.
The company emphasized that the only reason its weekly rodeo can continue is because Tejas Rodeo maintains its own herd of in-house horses that live on the property year-round. These horses will allow the venue to move forward with a modified performance that maintains the showโs energy and entertainment value while prioritizing animal safety.
To protect its herd, Tejas Rodeo has implemented enhanced sanitation protocols across the property. This includes increased disinfection in horse-handling zones, stall areas, equipment spaces, and common areas.
โWe feel a deep responsibility to our employees, contract personnel, and performers who rely on these events for their livelihood, as well as to the guests who visit from around the world,โ the company shared in a statement.
Bull riding will take on an expanded role in the final two rodeos of the season, offering additional excitement for guests as other events are temporarily adjusted.
Tejas Rodeo expressed its support for the horse owners, contestants, and rodeo families impacted by the outbreak, noting that it will continue to monitor conditions closely and make further adjustments if needed.
โThank you for your support and understanding,โ the statement concluded.
