The Spurs’ cheerleading squad “The Silver Dancers” have been with the organization since 1992 and has been disbanded due to “lack of interest”. The dance squad had cheered with fans prior to the start of the game, to the halftime show and when the games end.
Now, the Spurs Sports and Entertainment organization is doing away with the 35-member all-female Silver Dancers dance squad. The professional basketball organization is replacing the Silver Dancers with a more “family friendly” co-ed hype team. The Spurs stated
According to a press release by the San Antonio Spurs Friday, the new hype team will:
“elevate the game day experience and energize crowds with a diverse array of unique family-friendly talents, including tumbling, acrobatics, dance and stunts.”
โWe are excited to announce our new Spurs hype team,โ said Spurs Sports & Entertainment Vice President Tammy Turner. โThis team will further enhance the game-night experience for Spurs fans at the AT&T Center.โ
The name of the team will be announced at a later date.
According to the press release, auditions would be held starting July 21st and again on August 5th at the University of the Incarnate Word. They’re looking for acrobatic, stunt artists, acrobats, cheerleaders and other performers to attend the open tryouts.
A quick search on social media shows that the organization deleted their presence.ย
One former Silver Dancer posted to Twitter in response to “lack of interest.”
The #Spurs Silver Dancers are no more. I am told the @SilverDancers were told tonight that the program was ending due to lack of fan interest & would be replaced with a larger co-ed team. The news does further explain the press release SS&E sent out today. #GoSpursGo pic.twitter.com/8dNeAwSMBl

A petition surfaced to help save the Silver Dancers.
The petition states: “The Silver Dancers have kept Spurs fans proud of their team for 26 years. Unfortunately Spurs Sports & Entertainment has decided to disband our Silver Dancers for a โco-ed hype team.โ The Spurs already have Team Energy and the Silver Dancers. Many fans, including myself, have already took to Twitter that this is a huge setback for both the Spurs and their fan base. Thousands of young girlsโ dreams of becoming a Silver Dancer have been crushed. If you want your voice heard by Spurs Sports & Entertainment, please sign this petition to keep the Silver Dancers and prove that they are definitely not โlacking fan interest.โ
