Spurs Acquire De’Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin in Blockbuster Three-Team Trade

February 3, 2025 – San Antonio, TX – The San Antonio Spurs have made a significant move ahead of the trade deadline, acquiring guards De’Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin in a three-team trade involving the Sacramento Kings and Chicago Bulls. The deal sends Tre Jones, Zach Collins, Sidy Cissoko, two conditional first-round picks (2025 from Chicago, 2025 from Charlotte), two unprotected first-round picks (2027 from San Antonio, 2031 from Minnesota), and two second-round picks (2025 from Chicago, 2028 from Denver) to Sacramento and Chicago.
Fox, a dynamic 6-foot-3 guard, has been one of the NBA’s most electrifying players in recent seasons. This year, he has started in 45 games for the Kings, averaging 25.0 points, 6.1 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.47 steals per game while logging 37.0 minutes per contest. Over his eight-year NBA career, all spent with Sacramento, Fox has posted averages of 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.42 steals in 514 career games (500 starts). His breakout 2022-23 season saw him earn All-NBA Third Team honors, an NBA All-Star selection, and the inaugural Clutch Player of the Year Award, leading the Kings to their first postseason appearance since 2006. During that playoff run, Fox shined with averages of 27.4 points, 7.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game.
The 26-year-old Houston native has established himself as one of the league’s most versatile guards. Since being drafted fifth overall in 2017 out of the University of Kentucky, Fox joins an elite group of players—Luka Dončić, LeBron James, James Harden, Trae Young, and Damian Lillard—who have tallied at least 10,000 points, 3,000 assists, and 700 three-pointers over that span. Additionally, he is one of only three players, alongside Nikola Jokić and Harden, to record 11,000 points, 3,000 assists, and 700 steals since 2017.
McLaughlin, a 6-foot guard, adds depth to the Spurs’ backcourt. The 27-year-old spent five seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves before joining Sacramento in 2024. Over his career, he has averaged 4.2 points, 2.9 assists, and 1.5 rebounds in 14.5 minutes per game across 270 appearances. A native of Etiwanda, California, McLaughlin played four collegiate seasons at the University of Southern California before making his NBA debut in 2019.
Fox will wear No. 2 for the Spurs, while McLaughlin will don No. 11.
In parting with Tre Jones and Zach Collins, San Antonio moves on from key contributors in their recent rebuild. Jones, selected 41st overall by the Spurs in the 2020 NBA Draft, played five seasons in San Antonio, averaging 8.2 points and 4.7 assists in 21.5 minutes per game over 279 appearances (125 starts). Collins, a veteran forward/center, signed with the Spurs in 2021 and played in 196 games (63 starts), averaging 9.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 19.9 minutes per game across four seasons.
Cissoko, a second-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft (44th overall), saw limited NBA action in his two seasons with the Spurs, averaging 2.3 points and 1.1 rebounds in 29 appearances.
With the addition of Fox, the Spurs secure a high-level playmaker and scorer to complement their young core, headlined by 2023 No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama. As San Antonio continues to shape its future, this move signals an aggressive push toward playoff contention.
