SAN ANTONIO, TX โ SeaWorld San Antonio announced the passing of Martha, one of the parkโs most beloved beluga whales, at 40 years old.
In a statement shared by park officials, SeaWorld said it was with โheavy heartsโ that the SeaWorld San Antonio family said goodbye to Martha, who had been part of the park since it first opened in 1988. As one of the original residents, Martha became a familiar and cherished presence for generations of guests.
Over nearly four decades, Martha served as an ambassador for her species, helping inspire millions of visitors to learn more about beluga whales, marine ecosystems and ocean conservation. Park officials noted that her role extended beyond public encounters, as she also played an important social role within her pod.
โMartha was family,โ the statement read. โHer legacy lives on through all she inspired.โ
SeaWorld emphasized that its animal care specialists remain committed to the well-being of the eight other belugas currently in their care. The park stated that its dedicated team will continue to provide the highest level of care for the animals, focusing on their health, enrichment and overall quality of life.
Beluga whales are known for their distinctive white color and expressive nature, often earning them the nickname โsea canariesโ for their wide range of vocalizations. At SeaWorld San Antonio, they have long been among the parkโs most recognized marine animals.
Marthaโs passing marks the end of an era for the park, but her impact, both on the staff who cared for her and the visitors who encountered her, will not soon be forgotten.
