SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Zoo has introduced a powerful new tribute to the nation’s service members with the unveiling of the Warriors Heart Train, a patriotic addition designed to honor U.S. military personnel, veterans, and their families.

The steam engine-style train, officially revealed during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday morning, now becomes the third train in the zoo’s fleet. More than just an attraction, the Warriors Heart Train serves as a moving tribute, transforming each ride into a journey of remembrance and gratitude.

“This train is more than just a ride, it’s a living tribute,” said Tim Morrow, President and CEO of the San Antonio Zoo. “Each journey is an opportunity to honor and remember those who have served our country. In Military City USA, this is a meaningful way to connect our community with that legacy.”

A Community Tribute Built with Purpose

The project was made possible through a lead donation from Warriors Heart, a private accredited treatment program dedicated to helping active-duty military, veterans, and first responders facing challenges such as PTSD and addiction. Additional support from Valero helps keep the train running year-round.

Over the past year, the zoo’s maintenance team carefully constructed and detailed the train, blending the nostalgic charm of classic park railways with a meaningful mission. The train includes a wheelchair-accessible coach prominently branded with San Antonio’s official nickname, Military City USA.

Ceremony Honors Service and Sacrifice

The unveiling ceremony brought together local leaders, military representatives, and community partners in a program rooted in patriotic tradition. The event opened with a presentation of the colors by the Highlands High School Army JROTC Color Guard, followed by a performance of the National Anthem by U.S. Army veteran Nikita Fox.

Speakers included Warriors Heart co-founders Josh Lannon and Tom Spooner, along with retired Major General Juan G. Ayala representing the City of San Antonio, and U.S. Navy veteran Gina Ponce. City and county proclamations were also presented, reinforcing San Antonio’s deep military ties.

The ceremony concluded with the train’s inaugural ride, carrying donors, supporters, and military families through the zoo grounds.

A Ride That Carries Stories

Each coach, bench, and seat on the Warriors Heart Train is dedicated to honoring individual service members, military families, and legacies—ensuring that every ride carries personal stories forward.

“San Antonio is one of the most military-connected cities in the nation, and this train carries more than passengers—it carries a message,” said Lannon. “A message that we will continue to honor those who served, past and present.”

Community members still have the opportunity to be part of the tribute by purchasing a dedicated seat, bench, or full coach through the zoo’s website.

Supporting Military Families

In recognition of the Month of the Military Child, the San Antonio Zoo is also offering free admission throughout April for children of active-duty, retired, and veteran military members. Up to four additional family members can receive 50 percent off admission during the promotion.

With the launch of the Warriors Heart Train, the San Antonio Zoo adds a meaningful new experience that blends family fun with a lasting tribute—one that honors service, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of Military City USA.
