San Antonio, Texas โ€” The San Antonio Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished residents, announcing that Kevin the Duck was humanely euthanized on Thursday afternoon following a rapid decline in health.

Kevin, a wild mallard who arrived at the zoo around 2017, first appeared in the hippopotamus habitat and quickly became a favorite among staff and visitors. Believed to have been born on zoo grounds, he settled into life alongside the resident hippos, Timothy and Uma, earning a reputation for joining โ€” and often stealing the spotlight during โ€” their daily experiences.

Kevinโ€™s life took a special turn when the zooโ€™s Animal Care team discovered that he had a deformed wing and was unable to fly. In response, the team adopted him, providing lifelong care and ensuring he lived safely and comfortably within the zoo. Over the years, Kevin became an endearing symbol of resilience, companionship, and the unexpected bonds that can form in the animal world.

In recent weeks, animal care specialists observed Kevin experiencing mobility challenges. Subsequent examinations by the veterinary team revealed two large cancerous masses โ€” one in his chest that hindered his breathing, and another in his abdomen that affected his ability to walk. Given the severity of the findings, the team made the compassionate decision to euthanize him.

Kevin passed away peacefully under the careful attention of veterinarians and staff members who had cared for him throughout his eight-year life. His age fell within the expected lifespan of a wild mallard, which typically ranges from five to ten years.

Known affectionately for his playful personality, Kevin was often seen waddling into the hippo habitat, seemingly convinced he was part of the family. Timothy and Uma, the zoo noted, accepted him wholeheartedly.

The San Antonio Zoo is encouraging the community to remember Kevin by revisiting a 2021 tribute video created by the Zoo Crew, which features a special message to Kevin from his hippo companions.
