San Antonio unveils plans on Sunken Garden Theatre renovation

Brackenridge Park Conservancy with the help of the City of San Antonio and Bexar County announced plans today (September 17, 2021) to revitalize Sunken Garden Theater into a world class amphitheatre at the tune of a cool $62 million.

Currently the aging theatre has a lot of history here in town that started back in 1930. OTJ Architects designed these renderings of what the future of the one-of-a-kind facility will look like blending the history with the future. Many community events and concerts will be stopping here at the venue that includes covered overhead stadium seating, lawn seating, permanent restrooms, a full concessions stand, a true box-office, areas to sell merchandising, improved facilities and much, much more!

Here is a list that we obtained of the improvements in the bill.

  • Preservation of the historic amphitheater and modernization
  • Seating for more than 5,900 reserved seats
  • 1,100 areas to sit in the lawn area
  • VIP seating and lounge area
  • Permanent restrooms, concessions, and merchandising areas
  • Redesigned landscaping throughout the facility
  • Expanded venue entrance
  • New enclosed stage house with improved power facilities
  • Brand new dressing rooms for performers as well as upgraded backstage support facilities
  • Implementation of professional high-quality lighting and sound systems
  • Improved loading dock and bus parking area for booked acts

  • Professional permanent box office/guest services structure
