San Antonio to Host Hazardous Waste and Free Landfill Day on Feb. 14

SAN ANTONIO – Residents will have two opportunities to safely dispose of unwanted household materials on Saturday, February 14, as the City of San Antonio hosts a Quarterly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-Off event along with a Free Landfill Day.

The Quarterly HHW Drop-Off Center will operate from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 2755 Rigsby Avenue, 78222. City officials stress that household hazardous waste should never be placed in curbside carts and must instead be taken to an authorized drop-off facility.

Accepted materials at the HHW event include auto fluids, batteries, household cleaners and solvents, pool chemicals, oil filters, e-waste, fluorescent light fixtures and ballasts, pesticides, paint, printer cartridges, cooking oil, lacquer, shellac and furniture polish. Paint is limited to 25 one-gallon cans or five five-gallon pails per household, and total hazardous waste is limited to 220 pounds.

Items not accepted include trash, ammunition or fireworks, commercial or industrial waste, medical waste, medicine and construction materials.

Residents must bring a valid picture ID and a recent CPS Energy bill showing payment of the Environmental Fee. Materials should remain in their original containers whenever possible. If a container is leaking, contents must be transferred to a leak-proof container or lined cardboard box. All items should be placed in a box and transported in the trunk or truck bed. On-site technicians will unload the materials.

In addition to the hazardous waste event, Free Landfill Day will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at two participating locations:

• Republic Services Landfill, 7000 IH 10 E, 78219

• Waste Management Landfill, 8611 Covel Road, 78252

The event allows San Antonio residential Solid Waste rate payers to dispose of bulky items at no cost. Participants must provide a valid photo ID and a CPS Energy statement showing payment of the City’s Solid Waste Fee. Loads must be covered with a tarp in compliance with City ordinance.

Accepted items at landfill locations include appliances, carpet, fencing material, furniture, mattresses, toilets, water heaters and up to six passenger vehicle tires per household. Roofing materials, sheetrock, dirt, brick, brush, lumber, construction debris and commercial waste will not be accepted.

City officials encourage residents to take advantage of the February 14 events to properly dispose of hazardous chemicals and bulky waste while helping protect the environment and maintain clean neighborhoods.

Additional Household Hazardous Waste and Free Landfill Day events are scheduled throughout 2026. Residents can visit the City’s Solid Waste Management website to review future dates and search for accepted materials.
