In a vibrant celebration of St. Patrick’s Day tradition, the San Antonio River is set to turn emerald green during the annual Dyeing of the River Green event, sponsored by MadDogs. This long-standing tradition, dating back to 1968, is a festive spectacle that draws locals and visitors alike to witness the magical transformation.
Event Details:
The dyeing festivities will kick off on March 16 from 11 a.m. to noon along Museum Reach, followed by a second session from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. along the downtown stretch of the river. The verdant display will continue on St. Patrick’s Day itself, with an additional dyeing session from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. specifically along the downtown portion of the river.
Eco-Friendly Transformation:
Notably, the dye used for this iconic event is eco-friendly, ensuring that the vibrant green hue doesn’t harm the river’s ecosystem. The dye is carefully dispersed behind a barge that carries a bagpiper, adding a musical touch to the festivities. Each event will see 25 gallons of the eco-friendly dye being spread, creating a mesmerizing sea of green.
Annual Tradition:
Since 1968, the San Antonio River has undergone this annual metamorphosis, playfully earning the temporary moniker of the “River Shannon” during the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The event has become a beloved tradition, capturing the spirit of the Irish holiday and infusing the city with a lively and festive atmosphere.
Community Engagement:
Residents and tourists are encouraged to gather along the riverbanks to witness the transformation firsthand. The Dyeing of the River Green has become a communal celebration, fostering a sense of togetherness and camaraderie among those who come to experience the enchanting moment when the river dons its vibrant St. Patrick’s Day attire.
As San Antonio gears up for this lively tradition, the city is poised to embrace the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, transforming the San Antonio River into a temporary River Shannon for all to enjoy.
