The San Antonio River will be temporarily drained from January 11 through January 19 as part of scheduled maintenance aimed at keeping the river clean, safe, and ready for visitors.
The maintenance effort is a joint collaboration between San Antonio Public Works and the San Antonio River Authority. Crews will focus on debris removal, inspections, and upkeep of river infrastructure to ensure long-term functionality and environmental health.
The impacted section of the river includes the stretch from Alamo Street north to West Josephine Street, covering major portions of the downtown River Walk and nearby corridors. During this time, water levels will be significantly lowered or fully drained in certain areas, offering a rare look at the riverbed and its underlying structures.
Officials say the temporary drainage is a routine but critical process that helps preserve the River Walk as one of San Antonio’s most visited attractions. The work also supports flood control operations and allows crews to perform tasks that cannot be completed while the river is full.
Visitors and residents are encouraged to plan accordingly during the maintenance window. Normal river levels are expected to be restored following the completion of work on January 19.
