SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio is gearing up for one of its busiest holiday weekends of the year as tens of thousands of residents and visitors prepare to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, concerts, family festivals, and patriotic events across the city.
City officials expect more than 75,000 people to visit downtown throughout the Fourth of July weekend, where multiple large-scale events are scheduled to take place simultaneously.
“Our goal is to help everyone enjoy a safe, memorable Fourth of July celebration,” said City Manager Erik Walsh. “With several large events taking place at the same time, we encourage everyone to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and consider using public transportation.”
Woodlawn Lake Hosts Official City Celebration
San Antonio’s official Fourth of July celebration returns to Woodlawn Lake Park on Saturday, offering a full day of free entertainment in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.
The family-friendly event runs from 11 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. and features live music, carnival rides, food vendors, activities for children, and a fireworks spectacular to close out the evening.
Admission is free.
Downtown Filled With Holiday Events
Visitors heading downtown will have no shortage of options throughout the weekend. Scheduled events include:
- Stars & Stripes on Houston Street
- Stars & Stripes Food & Music Festival at Civic Park
- Independence Day at the Alamo
- Market Square Fourth of July Weekend Celebration
- River Walk Artisan Show
- Fireworks at Hemisfair
- Ye performing at the Alamodome
With thousands expected to attend multiple events throughout the day and evening, city officials are urging attendees to review road closures, parking options, and event information before leaving home.
Plan Ahead for Heavy Traffic
Officials recommend visitors:
- Leave early and allow extra travel time.
- Expect heavy traffic throughout downtown.
- Check road closures before traveling.
- Reserve parking in advance when possible.
- Consider using public transportation.
Those staying downtown are encouraged to walk between destinations, with many attractions located within walking distance of one another along the River Walk and downtown core.
VIA Offering Park & Ride Service
To reduce congestion, VIA Metropolitan Transit will provide special Park & Ride service beginning at 5 p.m. from four locations:
- Stone Oak Park & Ride
- Crossroads Park & Ride in Balcones Heights
- Frost Bank Center
- Walmart at Brooks
Round-trip fares are $2.60, with discounted fares available for children, seniors, students, and military personnel.
VIA’s Route 100 Prímo will also provide additional downtown connections, including service to the Robert Thompson Transit Station beginning at 5 p.m.
Alamodome Concertgoers Encouraged to Arrive Early
Fans attending Ye’s concert at the Alamodome are encouraged to arrive well before showtime.
H-E-B Plaza opens at 4:30 p.m., while venue doors open at 6 p.m. Parking lots B and C open at 2 p.m. and will cost $60 per vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis. Credit cards will be the only accepted payment method.
Concertgoers should also expect security screenings and review the Alamodome’s clear bag policy before arriving.
Safety Remains Top Priority
City leaders are asking everyone celebrating Independence Day to do so responsibly by remaining aware of their surroundings, following directions from law enforcement officers directing traffic, and reporting suspicious activity.
Officials also remind residents that firing guns within city limits is illegal and encourage everyone to designate a sober driver, use rideshare services, or take public transportation if alcohol is involved.
