San Antonio Police Chief Outlines Security Plans for Fiesta de los Reyes at Market Square

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus held a press conference today to lay out heightened safety measures ahead of this year’s Fiesta de los Reyes, one of the most popular and energetic events during the city’s annual Fiesta celebration, taking place at the Historic Market Square.

Joined by city officials and Fiesta organizers, Chief McManus addressed growing concerns about crowd control and public safety, unveiling a series of enhanced protocols designed to keep festivalgoers safe.

“This is a family-friendly event that draws tens of thousands each year, and public safety remains our top priority,” McManus stated. “You’ll see a strong presence of officers both in uniform and plain clothes throughout Market Square, along with enhanced surveillance and coordination with other agencies.”

He also emphasized the familiar mantra: “See something, say something.”

New this year, the Market Square grounds will be fully enclosed with six designated entrance points, each equipped with security checkpoints, metal detectors, and staff trained to handle crowd flow and emergency situations. A clear bag policy will also be enforced—mirroring the same one implemented at the Final Four Music Festival earlier this year.

No coolers or ice chests will be allowed. No backpacks. Only clear bags measuring 12 inches by 6 inches or smaller will be permitted.

“So take a piece of paper and fold it in half—that’s the size,” said McManus.

These updated regulations are part of a broader citywide initiative to prioritize safety at large-scale events, ensuring attendees can enjoy the vibrant culture, music, and food that Fiesta de los Reyes is known for.

Organizers also confirmed that the event will run from April 24 through May 4 and will end one hour earlier each night compared to previous years, in an effort to better manage crowds and ensure a smoother shutdown process.

Presented by the Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation, Fiesta de los Reyes not only honors General Ignacio Zaragoza but also serves as a fundraiser for student scholarships across San Antonio.

“This is more than just a party—it’s a celebration of our city’s heritage and unity,” McManus said.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public, with daily entertainment, food vendors, and cultural performances scheduled throughout the duration of Fiesta.
