SAN ANTONIO, TX — For the first time in over two decades, non-traveling visitors can once again experience the San Antonio International Airport (SAT) terminal beyond security through the newly launched SAT Pass Program. The program, which officially debuted this week, allows members of the public to access the post-security areas of SAT, offering opportunities to spend more time with loved ones, shop, and dine—without having to book a flight.

This is the first time since the events of September 11, 2001, that non-ticketed visitors have been allowed past security at SAT. The initiative is part of a growing trend among U.S. airports to enhance customer experience and bring back a sense of connection for families, aviation enthusiasts, and those looking to enjoy airport amenities.

How the SAT Pass Program Works

The SAT Pass Program is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis with limited daily slots. Participants must apply online and receive TSA approval before entry. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Apply Online

Visitors can apply the same day or up to seven days in advance via the airport’s official website. Applicants must provide their full legal name (as it appears on their ID), date of birth, and sex to undergo security screening.

Step 2: TSA Security Review

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will review applications:

  • Advance applications: Approval emails are sent after midnight on the day of the visit.
  • Same-day applications: Approval status is sent within 15 minutes of submission.

Step 3: Show Your SAT Pass at TSA Checkpoint

Approved visitors will receive an SAT Pass attached to their confirmation email, which they must present at the TSA general screening line alongside a valid government-issued photo ID. Pass holders will go through standard TSA security screening, just like ticketed passengers.

SAT Pass Rules & Guidelines

  • Printed and digital passes are accepted.
  • Visitors must comply with TSA’s 3-1-1 liquid rules and prohibited items list—just like airline passengers.
  • Expedited screening programs such as TSA PreCheck and CLEAR are not applicable for SAT Pass holders.
  • The pass is valid only on the approved date and time until 9:00 PM.
  • Re-entry is allowed on the same day but requires passing through TSA screening again.
  • Minors without a valid photo ID must be accompanied by an approved adult.

A Permanent Program with Room for Growth

Unlike some airport visitor pass programs that operate as pilots, the SAT Pass Program is a permanent addition to San Antonio International Airport. However, SAT officials reserve the right to modify or discontinue the program at any time.

“The SAT Pass is about creating more meaningful connections,” said an SAT spokesperson. “We want to give families extra time with loved ones before their flights, allow aviation enthusiasts to experience the terminal, and give locals the chance to enjoy our restaurants and shops inside the airport.”

What This Means for SAT Visitors

With the SAT Pass, San Antonio residents and visitors can now:

  • See off or welcome loved ones at the gate
  • Enjoy dining and shopping at post-security establishments
  • Experience the airport environment without booking a flight
  • Spot planes and enjoy aviation-related activities

How to Apply for SAT Pass

Interested visitors can apply online at SAT’s official website. Availability is limited daily, so early registration is encouraged.

As air travel continues to evolve, the SAT Pass Program represents an effort to enhance the airport experience while maintaining the highest security standards.
