San Antonio native Marcus Davila is set to make a significant mark on the film industry with his directorial debut, “The American Coyote.” Born and raised in the heart of Texas, Davila’s journey has taken him from serving in the United States Navy to becoming a passionate advocate for sharing untold stories.
After returning to San Antonio, Davila joined forces with his wife, Sabrina Trevino, a Los Angeles Film School alumna, to establish LionsAct Productions. The film production company, with Davila as Vice-President, focuses on creating compelling narratives with a local cast and crew. Despite starting from grassroots promotion, LionsAct Productions has garnered a loyal following.
Davila’s roots deeply influenced his debut film, “The American Coyote.” Drawing from personal experiences of visiting family in Monterrey, Mexico, during his youth, he witnessed the stark realities of poverty and the resilience of the people. These memories became the foundation for the film’s narrative, highlighting the struggles faced by those seeking a better life.
“The American Coyote” tells the fictional story of a child escaping cartel violence in Mexico, guided by a human smuggler or “coyote” across the border. Set in present-day Texas, the film explores the complexities of the character’s life within a criminal syndicate.
Originally planned as a short film, the project gained immense interest after the release of its trailer, prompting Davila to extend it into a feature film. Notably, the film boasts a diverse cast, including Peter Mark Vasquez, Panchito Gomez, Michael Ochotorena, DJ KANE, Devin Brown, and Ben Matias.
Davila’s efforts caught the attention of Ciro Depagio of Ciro Depagio Films, who joined as a producer. Furthermore, he signed with Enorama Talent Agency in Greece, securing an international distribution deal. The film is slated for its international premiere in Dubai and Athens in July 2024.
Despite challenges and a shoestring budget, Davila is confident that “The American Coyote” will resonate globally, shedding light on the human trafficking underworld. With support from industry veterans and a unique perspective on a critical issue, Davila aims to prove that San Antonio has untapped potential in the world of filmmaking.
As the film nears completion, San Antonio eagerly awaits the opportunity to showcase its burgeoning talent on the international stage in 2024.
