San Antonio, TX – May 6, 2024 – H-E-B is proud to announce the statewide winners for the 22nd annual H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, and San Antonio has much to celebrate! Among the recipients of this prestigious honor are two outstanding educators from the San Antonio area, recognized for their remarkable contributions to education.
Julie Minnis, a counselor at Dr. Hector P. Garcia Middle School in Northside Independent School District (NISD), was acknowledged as the recipient of the Counselor Secondary award. Michelle Fine, serving as the principal of John Glenn Elementary, also within NISD, was recognized as the recipient of the Principal Elementary award. These dedicated professionals have demonstrated exemplary commitment and innovation in their respective roles, positively impacting the lives of countless students.
During an awards ceremony held at the Marriott Marquis in Houston, H-E-B presented $480,000 in cash awards and grants to six teachers, two counselors, two principals, two school districts, one early childhood facility, and a public school board, all recognized as among the best in Texas. Since the inception of the program in 2002, H-E-B has awarded more than $13 million in cash and grants to teachers and schools across the state, making it the largest program of its kind in Texas and the nation.
The keynote address at the ceremony was delivered by none other than J.J. Watt, renowned NFL player and philanthropist. Watt, a native of Pewaukee, inspired the audience with his insights and experiences both on and off the field. As the president and founder of the Justin J. Watt Foundation, he exemplifies the spirit of giving back to the community by providing after-school athletic opportunities for children.
The winners of the Excellence in Education Awards are carefully selected from a pool of 68 finalists by a panel of judges comprising former winners, school administrators, and university and community leaders. Their dedication to educational excellence sets a standard for educators across the state.
San Antonio joins in congratulating Julie Minnis, Michelle Fine, and all the winners of the 22nd annual H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards for their outstanding achievements and commitment to shaping the future through education.
