San Antonio City Council changes popular highway to its original name

San Antonio City Council unanimously changed back the name on Thursday, February 10th, of a popular San Antonio highway to its original Historic Old Highway 90 name. Melissa Cabello Havrda, a District 6 council member had listened to the people in the area demanding for change. She went and fought for the business owners who had to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on signage and create new business cards with the new address.
Local business owners have been fighting for the change back since 2015 when the name was changed to Enrique M. Barrera Parkway. The local businesses formed a group called Save Old Highway 90 as well as backed by then District 6 Councilman Ray Lopez.
Members of the Save Old Highway 90 won’t leave out the former council member Barrera as they will honor him with a special venue bearing his name.
The group called for victory on their Facebook page.
Who was Enrique M. Barrera? Barrera served as a former District 6 councilman for five-and-a-half years, the same district that highway 90 was in. Barrera was also a member of the Edgewood Independent School District from 1978 to 1990. Barrera was also an ordained deacon at San Fernando Cathedral. Barrera passed away in 2007 at the age of 69.
