San Antonio City Council Approves New Downtown Development District to Build Missions Baseball Stadium
SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio City Council on Thursday approved the creation of a new development district that will own and operate a future downtown baseball stadium for the San Antonio Missions, taking a major step toward reshaping the city’s sports and entertainment landscape.
The newly established San Pedro Creek Development Authority will be a collaborative partnership between the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, and local development powerhouse Weston Urban. Designed to oversee the ballpark’s creation and operation, the Authority will be governed by a high-profile Board of Directors that includes the mayor, city manager, and the city’s chief financial officer.
This move comes months after the City Council approved a memorandum of understanding in September 2024 with Bexar County and Weston Urban, laying the groundwork for the multi-phase project. The plan includes a $160 million stadium situated along the scenic San Pedro Creek, near Fox Tech High School in the heart of downtown. In addition to the ballpark, the district will feature new hotels, apartments, and surrounding developments expected to generate an estimated $1 billion in tax revenue over time.
Weston Urban founder and prominent businessman Graham Weston, a key figure behind the ownership group of the Missions, is also spearheading this downtown revitalization initiative. The group emphasized that securing a modern, state-of-the-art stadium is vital to keeping the Missions in San Antonio, noting that without a new facility, the team faces potential relocation to another city under Minor League Baseball’s evolving stadium standards.
City officials project the stadium will be completed in time for Opening Day 2028. As part of the next phase, detailed planning and architectural design work will begin soon, including a study to determine if the stadium can be constructed with the flexibility to expand to Major League Baseball standards, positioning San Antonio as a future contender for a major league team.
This bold initiative signals a transformative investment in downtown San Antonio, potentially changing the skyline, enhancing tourism, and further rooting baseball into the city’s growing cultural and economic revival.
