SAN ANTONIO โ Polo will once again thunder across the historic grounds of Brackenridge Park as the Brackenridge Park Conservancy hosts the 3rd Annual Polo in the Park on Sunday, March 22, from 2 to 5 p.m.
The homecoming match will take place at the original Brackenridge Park Polo Field, now home to First Tee Greater San Antonio, bringing the historic sport back to a location that once served as a centerpiece of San Antonioโs polo scene.
The event is presented in partnership with the San Antonio Polo Club and First Tee Greater San Antonio, with additional support from the City of San Antonio Parks & Recreation Department and the Trinity University Girls Polo Team.
A Historic Tradition Returns
Polo was a cherished tradition in Brackenridge Park from the 1930s through the early 1980s, drawing large crowds as civilian and military teams competed on the grass field.
The sport made its modern return to the park in 2024 during the parkโs 125th anniversary celebration, reigniting interest in the historic pastime.
This yearโs event will feature an exhibition polo match with legacy polo families, special guest appearances, exclusive memorabilia, live music and festive competitions.
Guests can also participate in stylish contests, including a best-dressed competition and hat contest, celebrating the elegant fashion traditionally associated with polo.
A Community Celebration
General admission to Polo in the Park is free, and food trucks will be available for attendees to purchase refreshments during the event.
For those looking for an elevated experience, VIP packages are available, offering exclusive tents with catered service and premier viewing areas overlooking the field.
Attendees are encouraged to embrace classic equestrian fashion with statement hats, tailored blazers, sundresses and riding boots as they enjoy the afternoon festivities.
Poloโs Legacy in San Antonio
The sport has deep roots in San Antonio. In 1920, the newly formed San Antonio Polo Club was granted permission by the city to establish a grass polo field in Brackenridge Park.
A national polo tradition also began in 1930 when renowned bootmaker Cosimo Lucchese introduced the Lucchese Cup, awarded annually to the winning polo team. Generations of local polo families โ including the Armstrongs, Barrys, Fitzsimons, Gutierrez and Smith families โ played regularly at the field.
High-level polo continued in Brackenridge Park through the late 1980s before the tradition eventually faded.
