Northside ISD Approves Compensation Package with Pay Increases for Staff

Northside Independent School District (NISD) has recently announced the approval of a comprehensive compensation package for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. This package includes a three percent midpoint pay increase for all staff members, demonstrating the district’s commitment to recognizing and valuing the hard work and dedication of its employees.

Under this new compensation plan, classroom teachers will receive an additional $2,000, in addition to the three percent pay increase. Other employee groups on the 2023-2024 teacher hiring schedule will also benefit from the same $2,000 increase, ensuring fair and equitable compensation across the district.

In an effort to retain existing employees and attract new talent, the NISD Board of Trustees has also approved a one-time retention payment. This payment will be made to employees hired on or before September 1, 2023, and will be funded using Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds. The retention payment amounts will vary based on employee categories, with the majority of employees receiving $1,200. However, due to critical teacher shortages in special education and bilingual education, classroom teachers assigned to these areas will receive a higher retention payment of $2,500.

Dr. John Craft, Superintendent of NISD, expressed his appreciation for the district’s employees, acknowledging their pivotal role in the success of the organization. He stated, “Our employees are the heart of this organization. We value their work and wanted to make sure we could increase compensation for them in the new school year. We remain hopeful and will continue to advocate to state legislators that funding be allocated to further improve employee compensation.”

The approved compensation package will result in an approximate increase of $25 million in the general fund expenditure budget for NISD. Over the past few years, the district has prioritized fair compensation and staying competitive in the job market, leading to a cumulative increase of more than $148 million in employee compensation since 2019.

The decision to provide salary increases and a one-time retention payment reflects NISD’s commitment to attracting and retaining highly qualified educators and staff members. By investing in its employees, the district aims to maintain a supportive and rewarding work environment that ultimately benefits the students and the entire community.
