North East ISD Board of Trustees Approves Historic Salary Increase for Staff

In a landmark decision, the North East Independent School District (NEISD) Board of Trustees has approved the largest salary increase for staff in over two decades. The comprehensive compensation package, totaling nearly $35 million, aims to address the growing concerns of inflation and attract and retain talented educators and support staff.

The substantial compensation package will have a far-reaching impact on all eligible employees within the district. More than half of the funds will be allocated towards salary increases for teachers, counselors, librarians, and nurses, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the education system.

To ensure pay equity and market competitiveness, returning NEISD teachers and librarians will receive targeted adjustments based on their years of experience. This adjustment aims to bring their salaries more in line with market comparison data. Additionally, other hard-to-fill employee groups such as bus drivers, custodians, general education and special education assistants, and nurses will also receive targeted adjustments.

Eligible hourly employees will receive a minimum 6% increase, while eligible professional employees will receive a 4% increase from the midpoint of the new proposed pay ranges. These adjustments aim to provide meaningful raises that will help mitigate the impact of inflation on the hardworking staff members of NEISD.

Dr. Sean Maika, NEISD Superintendent of Schools, expressed the district’s commitment to supporting its employees in light of rising inflation. “We’re looking for ways to offset the inflation that is impacting everyone,” he stated. “I want to pay our folks. We’re trying to give what we can back to employees.”

As an additional incentive to retain employees, all eligible staff members will also receive a 2% retention incentive in November 2023, which will be funded through ESSER (Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief) funding. This retention incentive serves as a gesture of appreciation for their dedication and hard work.

While this salary increase demonstrates NEISD’s commitment to its employees’ financial well-being, the district acknowledges the need to balance this initiative with financial prudence. As the state legislature has not yet voted to increase funding for school districts, NEISD plans to offset the compensation initiative by identifying cost-saving measures throughout the district in the coming years. The district will analyze programs, practices, and procedures for efficiency and effectiveness in alignment with the Balanced District Scorecard.

NEISD staff members can expect to receive further information regarding compensation for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year in the near future. The district remains dedicated to providing competitive salaries that reflect the value and importance of its employees, while ensuring the responsible allocation of resources in these challenging financial times.

With this historic decision, the North East Independent School District Board of Trustees sets an example for other educational institutions, prioritizing the needs and well-being of their staff members, and demonstrating their commitment to providing a supportive and rewarding work environment for all.
