San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) just opened up Phillis Wheatley Park at 723 Arthur Street in the heart of the Eastside of San Antonio today. The park was built on a 1-acre strip of land between Arthur and Lamar streets off of North Mittman Street in the East Meadows community. The park was scheduled to open in the Spring of 2019, but with construction delays and weather, the timeframe was pushed back to near fall of 2019.
The new park was designed with the residents in mind and features a playground for all-ages, a multi-use pavilion, picnic tables, a dog friendly area complete with a fountain for both human and pet, clean up mitt stations, benches, bike racks, a walking trail, exercise equipment and an open field for plenty of activities such as football, frisbee, and other recreational sports.
SAHA celebrated the grand opening on the morning of September 12th with music, food trucks and also unveiled a memorial wall in honor of African American female poet, Phillis Wheatley and African American stage star, Ira Aldridge. The memorial wallwas designed by Houston artist Reginald Adams who creates mosaic-tile masterpiece murals all over the United States.
Plans for the park were unveiled in July 2018.
