SAN ANTONIO, TX (October 29, 2024) – Big changes are coming to the Blanco Rd. and Loop 1604 intersection as the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) prepares to open a new bridge on Monday, November 4, 2024. As part of the ongoing Loop 1604 North Expansion project, the intersection will close this weekend to finalize construction and transition to a new traffic pattern.

Weekend Closure Details

To complete the bridge opening, all lanes on Blanco Rd. at the Loop 1604 intersection will close from 9 p.m. on Friday, November 1, through 5 a.m. on Monday, November 4, weather permitting. These closures will allow crews to safely finish the new bridge’s construction. TxDOT has coordinated this schedule to minimize disruption and ensure safety.

New Traffic Pattern for Blanco Rd. Bridge

Starting Monday morning, November 4, drivers will experience a new traffic pattern on Blanco Rd. as traffic shifts to the newly completed bridge, located just west of the existing bridge. This adjustment is part of broader improvements in the area aimed at easing congestion and enhancing road safety for San Antonio drivers.

Detour Information

During the weekend closure, detours will guide travelers around the intersection:

Loop 1604 Eastbound Frontage Road: Eastbound frontage road traffic should use the Blanco Rd. turnaround, proceed on the westbound frontage road, and turn around at Bitters Rd. to access Loop 1604 eastbound mainlanes via the Bitters Rd. entrance ramp.

Blanco Rd. Northbound/Southbound – North of Loop 1604: Northbound and southbound travelers on Blanco Rd. should take Huebner Rd., turn east onto Bitters Rd., and return to Blanco Rd. using the Loop 1604 EB frontage road detour as noted.

Blanco Rd. Northbound/Southbound – South of Loop 1604: Travelers will head west on Bitters Rd., turn onto Huebner Rd., and follow the Loop 1604 EB frontage road detour.

What to Expect After the Opening

Upon reopening, TxDOT will shift all traffic onto the newly constructed bridge as improvements continue on Blanco Rd. itself. Law enforcement officers will assist with traffic flow, and business access will remain open throughout the closure. The scheduled work and detours are weather-dependent and subject to change.
