McCombs Family Rejoins San Antonio Spurs as Strategic Partners After 50 Years

In a momentous announcement, the San Antonio Spurs proudly welcomed back the McCombs family to their investor group. The NBA Board of Governors has approved this significant move, marking the return of the founding family to the organization that played a pivotal role in shaping San Antonio’s sports landscape.

Red McCombs, along with his wife Charline, has been a visionary figure in both business and sports. Their legacy dates back to 1958 when they made San Antonio their home. Red, a renowned business magnate, co-founded Clear Channel Communications and left an indelible mark on various industries, including professional sports. The McCombs family was instrumental in bringing professional basketball to San Antonio in 1973, showcasing their enduring commitment to the community.

Peter J. Holt, SS&E managing partner, expressed his delight, stating, โ€œRed, Charline, and the entire McCombs family mean so much to the Spurs and San Antonio. To see the McCombs family come full circle and officially welcome them back into our investor group is beyond special.”

With a history spanning seven decades, Red and Charline McCombs have left an indelible mark on San Antonio. Their family, comprising 32 members across multiple generations, continues their legacy through McCombs Enterprises, engaging in philanthropy, local car dealerships, real estate development, and energy investing.

Joseph Shields, grandson of Charline and Red McCombs and Executive Vice President of McCombs Enterprises, expressed the family’s excitement, stating, “The entire McCombs family is thrilled to renew our connection to the Spurs and join Peter, Corinna, and the Holt family as strategic partners.”

This announcement follows the trend of notable strategic partners joining the Spurs investor group since 2021, including Sixth Street, Michael Dell, Joe Gebbia, Kimberly Lewis, and Paul Viera. The Holt family remains the largest shareholder of the San Antonio Spurs, ensuring a dynamic collaboration between longstanding and new partners for the continued success of the organization.
