San Antonio District 1 Councilmember Robert Treviño calls on the city to consider renaming Columbus Park. Also, Treviño wants to have the statue of Christopher Columbus removed from the park as well with the support from the Christopher Columbus Italian Society. Treviño filed a consideration request on Wednesday to be placed on the agenda for the city council.
Treviño also suggested renaming the park to “Piazza Italia” because it better distinguishes it as a representation to the Italian community here in San Antonio.
The plan is to replace the statue with a symbol that represents the Italian culture because we’re a city of diverse cultures and backgrounds. San Antonio will commit to include all ethnicities and backgrounds.
The 2.1 acre park is located at 500 Columbus St. near downtown.
