SAN ANTONIO, TX — What began as a playful social media challenge between San Antonio Zoo and ESPN NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins has quickly transformed into one of the most entertaining wagers of the 2026 NBA Finals.
After Perkins predicted the New York Knicks would defeat the San Antonio Spurs and capture the NBA Championship, San Antonio Zoo President and CEO Tim Morrow decided to make things interesting.
Taking to X, Morrow challenged the former NBA champion with a bet only a zoo executive could create.
“Spurs win, you come shovel rhino poop. Spurs lose, you get a VIP tour of the entire zoo,” Morrow posted.
Perkins quickly accepted the challenge, replying publicly, “Can’t wait to take my kids to the San Antonio Zoo.”
What could have ended there instead took on a life of its own.
During a recent broadcast of ESPN’s NBA Today, Perkins was joined by San Antonio Zoo mascots Cowboy and Savannah, where the friendly wager escalated into a full-blown championship challenge packed with increasingly outrageous consequences.
If the Spurs bring home their sixth NBA Championship, Perkins has agreed to:
• Shovel rhino poop at San Antonio Zoo
• Treat 10 San Antonio Zoo employees to a meal at a restaurant of their choosing
• Sponsor 50 Spurs fans with VIP treatment at the zoo
• Wear a Spurs chain for an entire month
• Eat a raw onion live on NBA Today
• Shave both his head and beard
The growing list of commitments has generated excitement among Spurs fans and zoo supporters alike as San Antonio looks to rally behind its hometown team.
“We have the shovels ready, the rhinos are fed, and our staff is already trying to decide which five-star restaurant we’re going to,” said Tim Morrow, President and CEO of San Antonio Zoo. “We can’t wait to welcome Kendrick to the zoo. One way or another, San Antonio wins.”
While Perkins remains confident in his Knicks prediction, the challenge guarantees that he will be making a trip to the San Antonio Zoo regardless of who hoists the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
