If the city of San Antonio wants to keep it’s AAA-baseball team; the San Antonio Missions around it must play ball with the Major League Baseball who runs things.
According to Judge Nelson Wolff, who the current stadium is branded after says that the we need to build a new up-to-date stadium for the SA Missions or we could end up with a Double-A or Single-A team perhaps a totally different league in it’s own. Our triple-A team is the closest thing that comes to an MLB team and triple-A team have the potential to graduate to the big leagues.
If the city doesn’t get on the new stadium train soon, it could lose out on big money and it’s expansion window.
The new stadium has a price tag of $100 million and has until the 2020 season to figure it all out.
Why now?
The MLB’s Professional Baseball Agreement (PBA) with Minor League Baseball ends after next season so changes are imminent. MLB has plans to cut 40 to 42 teams to bring total number of MiLB teams in the country to 120.
With some rearrangements going on, some MiLB teams may go from Triple-A to Class-A and the other way around. MiLB will focus on increasing players salaries in some cities depending on the region and performance of the teams, travel expenses and the condition of the current stadium they’re playing in.
According to the MiLB, only 25% of the current stadiums are up-to-par in what they deem acceptable conditions and the current Nelson Wolff stadium isn’t that.
The Missions have called Nelson Wolff stadium their home field since 1994.
The city is making some decisions on factors of where to place the new stadium, whether to move it more in a centralized location or downtown.
The MLB and MiLB don’t have any solid plans but plan on working things out by the end of 2020. Will it be too late for San Antonio?
