Iconic Carnitas Lonja Bids Farewell After 7 Years of Culinary Excellence

It is truly difficult to post these closures one after another. In a heartfelt announcement on Instagram, Alex Paredes, the visionary behind Carnitas Lonja at 1107 Roosevelt Ave suite B, shared the heartbreaking news of the beloved traditional southside Carnitas restaurant’s permanent closure. Established in 2017, Carnitas Lonja, a beacon of authentic Michoacán cuisine, and its sister establishment, Fish Lonja, will be closing their doors on December 31, 2023.

With a heavy heart, Paredes expressed gratitude to the community that embraced Carnitas Lonja for seven remarkable years. In his Instagram post, he shared, “With a lump in our throat and tears in our eyes, we are announcing the permanent closing of Carnitas Lonja and Fish Lonja on 12/31/2023.”

The announcement marks the end of a culinary era that brought a taste of Michoacán, Mexico, to the heart of San Antonio. Carnitas Lonja’s commitment to serving the finest traditional dishes from its modest kitchen garnered widespread acclaim, earning it a place among the best restaurants in the United States by various publications. The restaurant also received a James Beard nomination, solidifying its status as a culinary gem.

Paredes expressed deep gratitude, saying, “Our goal was always to serve the best of the best food that we could produce in our little tiny kitchen.” Despite its unassuming size, Carnitas Lonja made a significant impact, transcending its physical space to become a culinary destination.

The announcement acknowledged the support of the Southside community, recognizing the integral role it played in the restaurant’s success. Paredes shared, “Nothing would have been possible without the support of our community. We will forever be grateful for the support of our community in the Southside; we will miss you all.”

As Carnitas Lonja prepares to close its doors at the end of the year, it leaves behind a legacy of culinary excellence, community connection, and a profound appreciation for the rich flavors of Michoacán. The impact of Carnitas Lonja on San Antonio’s culinary scene will be remembered, and its closing marks the end of a chapter that has enriched the city’s food culture.
