Honoring Sacrifice and Strength: Texas Veterans Showcase Resilience at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series San Antonio in Military City, USA
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Nov. 5, 2024) – Two Texas veterans are preparing to push their physical and mental limits by running a marathon at this December’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series San Antonio. This extraordinary feat, achieved by only a tiny fraction of the U.S. population, requires months of disciplined training and an unyielding spirit. Among those stepping up are Gretchen Evans, a Purple Heart recipient, and Nick McCoy, a U.S. Army veteran and Team U.S.A. ParaPan participant. Both are well-acquainted with the dedication required to overcome life’s obstacles.
Command Sergeant Major Gretchen Evans, one of the most decorated female veterans in U.S. history, boasts accolades such as the Bronze Star, Combat Action Badge, and Purple Heart. During her 27-year military career, Evans served in several leadership roles, including overseeing 30,000 troops in Afghanistan. Her life changed in 2006 when a rocket blast caused her to lose her hearing, ending her military career but not her determination. She now advocates for veterans with disabilities and founded Team UNBROKEN, a mixed-ability team that competes in races worldwide. For Evans, running offers solace: “Running brings me peace in my mind, soul, and body,” she says.
Returning to Texas for this special event holds added meaning for Evans. “Running this race is special in so many ways, but the most special reason is that my husband and I were married in San Antonio. My husband, Captain/Chaplain Robert D. Evans, U.S. Navy (RET), is also a veteran and my biggest supporter, along with my service dog Rusty,” she shares.
Boerne native Nick McCoy’s story echoes resilience and determination. Injured in Iraq during his second deployment in 2006, McCoy ultimately lost both legs. He underwent rehabilitation at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, and through Texas ParaSports, found a renewed sense of purpose in Para Track & Field. McCoy has since represented Team U.S.A. at the Para Pan-American Games and competed in countless marathons. “My first and favorite marathon is Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio,” says McCoy, who will be running the San Antonio race for the 14th consecutive year.
Evans and McCoy are among many veterans and active-duty soldiers participating in this year’s event. Each finisher will receive a Limited-Edition Military Coin in recognition of their service. With Fort Sam Houston on the course and performances from military bands, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series aims to honor veterans’ resilience.
“We are truly honored to host active-duty and veteran runners at Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio. Being in Military City, USA, brings a heightened sense of gratitude for those who serve,” says Race Director Adam Zocks. “We hope that we can offer an experience that conveys even a fraction of our appreciation.”
