SAN ANTONIO, TX โ H-E-B, one of the largest privately held companies in the United States and Texasโ largest private employer, continues to be a cornerstone of Texas commerce and community. Its remarkable journey began in 1905 when Florence Butt invested $60 to open the C.C. Butt Grocery Store in Kerrville, Texas.
A Humble Beginning
The store, located on Main Street in Kerrville, operated on the first floor of the Butt familyโs home. Florenceโs youngest son, Howard E. Butt, began his journey in the business by delivering groceries via a baby carriage and later by horse and buggy. Despite its small beginnings, the storeโs values of quality service and community connection quickly became its foundation.
After graduating as valedictorian of Tivy High School in 1914, Howard Butt took over the family business following his service in World War I. In 1921, he implemented a cash-and-carry system, eliminating the traditional credit-based model, which helped foster growth and financial stability.
Expansion Across Texas
Under Howard Buttโs leadership, the company grew significantly, extending its reach to the Rio Grande Valley in the 1930s and eventually moving its headquarters to Harlingen, and later to Corpus Christi. By acquiring the Harlingen Canning Company in 1936, H-E-B began producing Texas-grown, Texas-made goods, further solidifying its reputation as a community-driven enterprise.
Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, H-E-B expanded into larger cities such as Corpus Christi, Austin, and San Antonio, laying the groundwork for its current success.
Commitment to Community
Howard E. Butt, Sr., embraced a personal credo: โHe profits most who serves best.โ This philosophy shaped the companyโs approach to business and philanthropy. Inspired by his mother, Howard, alongside his wife Mary Elizabeth, became deeply involved in charitable activities across Texas, solidifying H-E-B as a company that prioritizes giving back to the communities it serves.
H-E-B Today
Headquartered in San Antonio since 1985, H-E-B has grown into one of the most recognizable and respected brands in Texas. The company operates over 400 locations, employs tens of thousands of Texans, and remains a steadfast supporter of local communities through philanthropic initiatives.
H-E-Bโs enduring legacy as a family-operated company with a mission to serve its customers and community is a testament to its core values. From its modest beginnings in Kerrville to becoming a Texas institution, H-E-B stands as a beacon of service, quality, and tradition.
