Fuddruckers: The burger chain that started in San Antonio, TX

It all started in 1976 when Philip J. Romano¬† moved San Antonio, Texas from West Palm Beach, Florida and started the burger chain we know today as Freddie Fuddruckers in 1978. Romano took an old bank at 8602 Botts Lane and converted it to a burger restaurant knowing that “the world needed a better hamburger.”

The concept was simple, provide in-house ground on-site 100% all American premium beef and fresh baked on site buns along with the fixings of fresh sliced tomatoes, lettuce, onions and a vat of cheese sauces. The burgers could be paired up with huge thick cut fresh fries made from the finest potatoes hand selected.

By 1988, There were over 150 restaurants in the chain around the United States. Romano had left Fuddruckers to start Romano’s Macaroni Grill in Leon Springs, TX after all he could have done for the restaurant.

Magic Brands, LLC purchased Fuddruckers from Romano in 1998. On April 22, 2010 Magic Brands, LLC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

On June 18, 2010 Luby’s, Inc purchased Austin, TX based Fuddrucker’s parent company Magic Brands, LLC for $61 million at an auction and was finalized in the summer of 2010.
