With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Tejano legend Johnny Canales at the age of 77. Johnny had been battling health issues, but his spirit remained strong until the end. He was more than just a beloved husband, father, TV host, musician, and entertainer; he was a beacon of hope and joy for countless people. His infectious charisma and dedication to promoting Latino music and culture left an indelible mark on the world.
Johnny Canales was born in 1947 in General Treviรฑo, Mexico. He moved to the United States and, during the 1960s, served in the Army in Germany. Upon returning to the Coastal Bend, Johnny began working as a disc jockey at a Spanish-language radio station while also starting his own band, “Johnny Canales y su Orquesta.” His passion for music and entertainment led him to host the eponymous “The Johnny Canales Show,” a half-hour Tejano music-centric television variety show that began airing on KRIS, a Corpus Christi TV station, in 1983. The show quickly became a staple in many San Antonian homes and across the country, helping to spread Tejano music from coast to coast.
Johnny was known for his coined catchphrase, “You got it! Take it away!” He brought many Tejano artists into the spotlight, most notably giving one of the first live performances to a young Selena by her 13th birthday and taking Selena y Los Dinos for their first concerts in Mexico. His contributions to the music industry and his efforts to promote Latino culture are immeasurable.
Johnny leaves behind his devoted spouse, Nora Canales, and countless fans who were touched by his work and his vibrant spirit. His legacy will live on through the lives he influenced and the joy he brought into the world.
We thank you all for your kind words, love, and support during this difficult time. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. Let us remember Johnny not with sadness, but with the joy and passion he always brought into our lives.
