SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A new fast-casual restaurant is bringing a fresh take on Mexican cuisine to the rapidly growing Far West Side of San Antonio. El Mercado Bold Mexican Bowls has officially opened at Portico at Shaenfield Ranch, a brand-new shopping center located near the intersection of Loop 1604 and Shaenfield Road.

Situated at 7807 W. Loop 1604 N., Suite 1124, El Mercado offers a modern dining experience centered around customizable bowls inspired by bold Mexican flavors and prepared fresh right in front of guests. Its motto, “Bold. Fast. Made Your Way,” perfectly reflects the concept.

Unlike traditional Mexican restaurants, El Mercado focuses on buildable bowls, salads, and fresh ingredients, allowing guests to personalize their meals with a variety of proteins, bases, toppings, and house-made flavors. Upon entering, guests are greeted by digital menu boards and an ordering counter where meals are assembled fresh to order.

Among the standout menu items are the Brisket Barbacoa Bowl, loaded with beef barbacoa, Mexican rice, roasted potatoes, charro beans, pico de gallo, pickled onions, and guacamole; the Tejano Beef & Chicken Bowl featuring grilled meats, fire-roasted corn, sautéed peppers and onions; and the popular Birria Bowl packed with roasted potatoes, beans, guacamole, cheddar cheese, and pickled onions.

Other favorites include the Chicken Alambre Bowl with grilled chicken and bacon, the Asada Bowl, and the Roasted Chicken & Corn Bowl featuring salsa macha and creamy lemon cotija dressing. Guests looking for lighter options can choose from fresh salads such as the Chicken Kale Salad, Avocado Chicken Pasta Salad, and Beef Chimichurri Salad.

One of El Mercado’s unique features is its Crunch Bar, where guests can customize their bowls with additional toppings and textures for an extra layer of flavor. Every bowl can also be paired with a choice of warm corn or flour tortillas.

To complement the food, guests can enjoy refreshing aguas frescas, cerveza, or a selection of mixed drinks while dining inside the restaurant.

The dessert menu offers several sweet treats with a Mexican twist, including Pastel de Elote, a traditional Mexican sweet corn cake, Mexican Chocolate Cake infused with warm spices, and Piloncillo Chocolate Chip Cookies made with unrefined Mexican sugar.

The opening of El Mercado adds another exciting dining option to Portico at Shaenfield Ranch, one of San Antonio’s newest retail developments. The center is quickly becoming a dining destination for residents in the surrounding communities and is conveniently located just minutes from Alamo Ranch and the Bandera Road corridor.

Additional restaurants expected to join the development include D’ Fish House, Makirrito, Bitelo Brazilian Steakhouse, and new locations of local favorites Box St. All Day and Crepeccino, creating a diverse mix of culinary offerings on the city’s booming Far West Side.

As growth continues across Northwest San Antonio, El Mercado Bold Mexican Bowls is positioning itself as a convenient and flavorful option for lunch, dinner, or a quick bite, offering a modern spin on Mexican comfort food that goes beyond the traditional taco and burrito experience.
