The planned housing partnership at The Continental represents a larger effort by UT San Antonio to transform its downtown campus into a more complete academic and residential destination.
University leaders view the new housing option as both a near-term solution for students seeking to live closer to classes and a valuable opportunity to better understand long-term demand for downtown living. Insights gathered from the inaugural group of residents are expected to help shape future housing initiatives, including additional residential opportunities the university hopes to introduce as early as Fall 2027.
To help students navigate housing decisions, UT San Antonio has also teamed up with College Pads, an online platform that provides resources for comparing rental properties, locating roommates and learning the fundamentals of off-campus living. The service is intended to help students make informed decisions while exploring housing options near campus.
The housing expansion comes during a period of significant growth for the university’s downtown operations. Beginning this fall, the new College of AI, Cyber and Computing will establish its home downtown alongside the College of Education and Human Development, further increasing the concentration of students, faculty and research activity in the city center.
With those additions, UT San Antonio expects more than 8,000 students to be studying downtown this academic year, bringing the institution closer to its goal of reaching 10,000 downtown students by 2028.
University officials say the growing student population is helping create a stronger connection between academic programs and the many businesses, organizations and innovation centers located throughout downtown San Antonio.
“As we approach 8,000 students learning downtown, we are creating an environment where growth and student success go hand in hand,” said Heather Shipley, provost and senior executive vice president for Academic Affairs. “Bringing more students together to learn in the heart of San Antonio expands opportunities for experiential learning, strengthens connections with industry and community partners and helps ensure our graduates are prepared to meet the workforce needs of our region and state.”
The addition of student housing at The Continental marks another milestone in UT San Antonio’s long-term vision of building a fully integrated urban campus where students can attend class, conduct research, gain professional experience and live within the same thriving downtown district.
