Discover Mel Chin’s CoCobijos: A Unique Art Installation Along the San Antonio River

Located at the intersection of the San Antonio River and VFW Boulevard, Mel Chin’s CoCobijos is a captivating art installation that beckons visitors to explore the path leading from the river to Mission San José via Mission County Park. This remarkable structure is composed of two faceted cactus-like pads, gracefully curving in a supportive embrace, as if symbolizing the resilience and interconnectedness of life.

Inspired by the sight of prickly pear cactus adorning the roof of Mission San José, Mel Chin reflected upon the nurturing qualities of these plants, which provide sustenance and shelter for both humans and animals. Furthermore, he contemplated their ability to thrive in the face of time and the challenging climate of Texas. Thus, the term “CoCobijos” was coined by the artist to describe these unique “co-shelters.”

As you journey along the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River, you will encounter four art portals thoughtfully designed by various artists to enhance the connection between visitors and the historic missions. Among these portals, CoCobijos stands out as an awe-inspiring testament to the resilience of nature and the enduring spirit of the San Antonio community.
