Could San Antonio Become Delta’s Next Big Texas Market?

San Antonio may be getting a much bigger spot on Delta Air Lines’ Texas map.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian has identified San Antonio as a market the airline is looking toward for longer-term expansion as the Atlanta-based carrier continues building its presence in Texas.

The comments immediately raise a tantalizing question for the Alamo City: Could San Antonio eventually become a major Delta focus city, or even something resembling a Texas hub?

For now, the answer is purely speculative. Delta has not announced plans to establish a hub in San Antonio, nor has the airline announced a specific timeline or major new slate of routes from San Antonio International Airport.

But Bastian’s interest is significant.

During a recent appearance on the Airlines Confidential podcast, Bastian acknowledged Delta is not as large in Texas as the company would like and pointed toward San Antonio as a market the airline is watching further down the road.

The comments come as Delta continues investing heavily in nearby Austin, where the carrier has been building a larger operation and competing for a greater share of one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the state.

San Antonio could represent the next chapter.

Why San Antonio could make sense for Delta

San Antonio sits in the heart of the booming Central and South Texas region and is within roughly 80 miles of Austin, creating a potential two-city strategy for an airline looking to challenge the entrenched positions of American Airlines and Southwest Airlines in Texas.

San Antonio International Airport already lists Delta among its operating airlines, and current airport schedules show Delta service connecting San Antonio with several of the carrier’s major markets, including Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.

What San Antonio has historically lacked is a dominant network carrier using the city as a major connecting point.

That could make the market particularly interesting.

Instead of entering another Texas airport where a competing legacy carrier already operates a fortress hub, Delta could potentially build a larger operation in a major metropolitan area where no legacy airline currently maintains a hub.

Still, there is a considerable difference between expanding flights and creating an airline hub. Nothing announced by Delta so far indicates San Antonio has been selected for the latter.

The airport itself is preparing for major growth

Timing could work in San Antonio’s favor.

San Antonio International Airport is undergoing a massive expansion through its ELEVATE/SAT development program.

The airport says its new terminal will include up to 18 domestic and international gates, more than 850,000 square feet of terminal space, 41,000 square feet of concessions and more than 29,000 square feet dedicated to club lounge space. The expanded facilities are expected to accommodate passenger growth well into the future.

That additional gate capacity could become particularly important if Delta or another airline decides to significantly increase its San Antonio operation.

Could international flights be next?

For San Antonio travelers, perhaps the most intriguing possibility is what a substantially larger Delta presence could eventually mean for international service.

San Antonio has spent years pursuing additional nonstop destinations, and a stronger relationship with a major global network carrier could open new possibilities.

Delta also has an extensive network of international partners and overseas destinations through its larger hub system.

But expectations should remain grounded.

Bastian’s comments about San Antonio do not amount to an announcement of nonstop Delta flights from SAT to Europe or other long-haul international destinations.

Any future transatlantic service would depend on passenger demand, aircraft availability, airport infrastructure, corporate travel and whether an airline believes San Antonio can sustainably support the route.

Still, the airport’s new infrastructure is being designed with international growth in mind. Earlier planning documents for the new terminal called for multiple international-capable positions and a new international arrivals facility.

That means the physical groundwork for a more ambitious future is being laid regardless of which airline ultimately takes advantage of it.

A sleeping giant waking up?

San Antonio has often played the underdog in Texas aviation despite the size of its metropolitan area, tourism industry, military presence and growing business community.

That story could be changing.

The airport is expanding, the region continues to grow, and major airlines are increasingly paying attention to Central Texas.

Delta’s interest does not guarantee San Antonio will become the airline’s next hub. At this stage, calling SAT a future Delta hub would be getting several chapters ahead of the story.

But having the CEO of one of the world’s largest airlines publicly identify San Antonio as a future growth opportunity is noteworthy on its own.

If Delta eventually decides to make a major play for the Alamo City, San Antonio International Airport could look considerably different a decade from now.

And for a city accustomed to watching some of Texas’ biggest aviation moves happen elsewhere, this time San Antonio may have an opportunity to take the lead.
