Confluence Park on the southside celebrates five years
Wow. Time sure does fly.
Confluence Park managed by the San Antonio River Foundation, really helped grow the southside with a nationally recognized park that brings joy, art, culture, education, native ecology and recreation to San Antonio’s south side. Nestled at 301 W. Mitchell, the park is nestled right along the banks of the San Antonio River and surrounded by tranquil nature with many trees.
What was once a fenced out CPS Energy laydown yard that has been transformed into something that everyone can enjoy has said many things about the growth of the area. Confluence Park was designed by Lake|Flato Architects, Matsys Design and Rialto Studios to show and tell a story. There are many postings throughout the park on the many features to let guests first-hand tell the vital importance of the native ecology and healthy river systems.
Did you know that rainwater is captured through the three-acre park and divert it to a 130,000 gallon underground storage system? That captured rainwater is used for the park’s irrigation to the park’s restrooms that helps minimize the impact to our beloved Edward’s Aquifer system.
If you’ve visited the park, you may notice the structure that houses the restrooms. That is the Estela Avery Education Center. This structure is powered by a 14kW solar panel array and has 10 inch-thick concrete walls, two are built part of the natural earth. This structure is designed to help minimize the park’s energy demands and allows Confluence Park to give back rather than consume.
Let’s talk about the featured attraction of Confluence Park, the BHP Pavilion.
Constructed December 2017, the BHP Pavilion is that gathering spot of many local events since its opening in March 2018 has hosted over 32,000 students & registrants, hosted over 350 programs for 70 schools across 11 districts and helped more than 75 non-profit partners during this short amount of time.
