City Council approves to move Christopher Columbus statue

In a motion led by San Antonio City Councilmember Roberto Treviño to move the Christopher Columbus statue to be returned to the Christopher Columbus Italian Society was unanimously approved by council members.

“Our city is home to the earliest indigenous settlements as well as Italian immigrants, who first arrived here as early as 1870s,” Councilman Robert Trevino said. “We are being asked to acknowledge symbols in our community that embody a history of oppression, slavery and genocides that have painful representation for groups in our city.”

“As cathartic as tearing down these figures are, it does little to improve the relationship between prominent cultures,” Trevino said. “The best way is to listen to our indigenous and Italian citizens.”

Moving forward the park at 500 Columbus St would be renamed Piazza Italia Park.
