Annual River Walk Maintenance Program Set to Begin January 13

SAN ANTONIO, TX – January 2025 – The iconic San Antonio River Walk will undergo its annual maintenance program starting Monday, January 13, through Friday, January 17, 2025. A joint effort between the City of San Antonio’s Center City Development and Operations Department, the Public Works Department, and the San Antonio River Authority, this project ensures the river remains a clean and vibrant attraction for residents and visitors alike.
What to Expect
During this maintenance period, a small section of the San Antonio River will be drained to allow crews to perform essential work. Key details include:
- Drained Sections:
- Fully drained: Main channel from Brooklyn Avenue to Houston Street
- Partially drained: Houston Street to Nueva Street
- Unaffected Areas: The bustling River Walk loop will remain operational, and Go Rio boat services will continue in this area.
- No Road Closures: The maintenance will not impact road traffic in the downtown area.
Purpose of the Maintenance
Unlike past years, this year’s maintenance program will not include large-scale cleaning or item retrieval from the riverbed. Instead, crews will focus on critical maintenance tasks and assessments of the drained sections to identify future improvement projects.
Draining the river is an important step in ensuring the River Walk continues to thrive as one of San Antonio’s most beloved attractions.
A Collaborative Effort
The River Walk Maintenance Program reflects the commitment of multiple city departments and agencies to preserving the beauty and functionality of the San Antonio River Walk, which draws millions of visitors each year.
