A restaurant failed to manage big crowd during pandemic

The Well, a bar that had been reclassified as a restaurant under the new TABC rules has been cited. The establishment is near the UTSA college district on the northwest side of San Antonio is under severe scrutiny due to several videos popping up confirming a packed house on August 16th.

There were videos coming from patrons showing zero social distancing and little to no one wearing any face coverings inside the venue.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg had some words to say on his daily briefing calling the establishment “gross negligence”. He is glad that the venue had been given two citations. The mayor threatened to shut down the establishment if necessary.

According to the owner of The Well, Lauren Stanley, said they had strict social distancing measures in place but that their security team they had hired for Saturday night had walked out on them after a contract dispute. The bar was unable to manage the large number of patrons that came through.

“We take full responsibility, have hired a new security company and put new procedures in place to ensure we are in compliance with local and state regulations at all times,” Stanley wrote in a news release. “We want people to feel confident in knowing that The Well is a responsible member of this community, offering a place where people can feel safe while enjoying a good meal and having fun.”

Since then, TABC has paid The Well a visit since their reopening and the owner mentioned that they were in compliance each visit.
Saturday night is when the city of San Antonio had received multiple calls on the COVID-19 hotline to complain about how there was no social distancing or masks enforcement on the property.
