SAN ANTONIO, TX — After nearly three decades at the helm of the San Antonio Spurs, Gregg Popovich is stepping down as head coach and will transition into a new role as President of Basketball Operations, the organization announced today.

Popovich, who began his journey with the Spurs in 1988 as an assistant coach, went on to become one of the most successful and respected head coaches in NBA history. Over his 29 seasons leading the team, he amassed 1,422 regular season wins—the most in NBA history—and guided the Spurs to five NBA Championships.

“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” Popovich shared in a heartfelt statement. “I’m forever grateful to the players, coaches, staff, and fans who allowed me to serve them, and I’m excited to continue supporting the organization, community, and city that mean so much to me.”

Spurs Chairman Peter J. Holt praised Popovich’s impact, calling him a “one-of-one” leader and coach who transformed not only the team but also the city of San Antonio.

“Coach Pop’s extraordinary impact on our family, San Antonio, the Spurs, and the game of basketball is profound,” said Holt. “Our entire family, alongside fans from across the globe, are grateful for his remarkable 29-year run as head coach.”

Popovich’s career spanned 37 years in the NBA, including time with the Golden State Warriors, but 35 of those years were spent in San Antonio. His deep connection to the Spurs organization and the city itself is unmatched, and his legacy as a coach, mentor, and visionary continues in this next chapter.

The Spurs have not yet named a successor as head coach.
