San Antonio Zoo Enhances Safety Measures Following Preliminary Avian Influenza Findings

San Antonio, TX – The San Antonio Zoo has received preliminary test results indicating that a deceased wild black vulture found on zoo grounds has tested “non-negative” for Avian Influenza. The bird has been sent for further testing, and in response, the zoo is taking proactive steps to safeguard its animal residents.
Beginning Monday, February 24th, the zoo will implement temporary operational adjustments, including:
- Closure of Key Areas: The Hixon Bird House, Lory Landing, and Flamingo Mingle will be temporarily closed.
- Modified Feeding Practices: Fish feeders will be emptied to prevent attracting wild birds.
- Relocation of Certain Birds: Some birds in the zoo’s care will be temporarily moved off habitat.
“These measures are in place as an extra precaution to protect the health of our animals and visitors,” a zoo spokesperson said. “We are following guidelines similar to those implemented by zoological facilities nationwide.”
The zoo will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as further test results become available.
